Going the Extra Mile When Providing Excellent Customer Service

I recently witnessed some truly great customer service, and I thought I’d share the story with you. I was in a fast food restaurant, waiting on an order to be filled. A gentleman came in after me and placed an order, and the employee told him it would be about five minutes before the order was ready. For his trouble, the manager gave him a free small drink. The customer was impressed, and I would be willing to bet that went a long way to keeping that customer satisfied, and it got me to thinking about the ways we can go above and beyond in delivering excellent customer service.

It doesn’t always mean giving away free merchandise, or giving steep discounts at every turn. If we did all those, it would impact our bottom line in ways that would be counter productive. But there are little ways we deliver the extra mile for our customers. I recently did business with a mail order company, and in addition to my merchandise, I got a hand-written thank you note, a gesture I really appreciated. Needless to say, I will be doing business with that company again. Thank you notes are a great way to let customers know you care, but hand write them—typed or form letters appear impersonal.
